Mercury, Mystics Game Preview

With August underway, the Phoenix Mercury (13-11) get ready to meet the Washington Mystics (14-10) in just their second match-up of the season.

The last time these two teams saw each other (July 5), the Mercury came out on top with an 88-80 victory led by Brittney Griner with 30 points and 14 rebounds. Since Griner’s injury, the Mercury have dropped four of their last six games, despite strong effort from Mercury reserves and Diana Taurasi. Phoenix had their two-game win streak cut short Friday night by Connecticut, who held on for the 93-92 win. Taurasi scored 33 points in the loss, while Leilani Mitchell added 17 points and 8 assists.

The Mystics who had won three straight also had their streak snapped on Friday, as the San Antonio Stars gained their first back-to-back wins in a 76-74 victory over Washington. The Mystics who were without Elena Delle Donne (torn left thumb ligament) only shot 32% from beyond the arc and 66% from the charity stripe. Kristi Toliver scored 18 points in the loss, while Tierra Ruffin-Pratt added 17. Krystal Thomas grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds.
