Lady Magicians Come Up Short, 71-68 Against SHC

Memphis, Tenn., — The Magicians of LeMoyne-Owen College (LOC) welcomed the Spring Hill College (SHC) Badgers on MLK Day, for a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) showdown.

Up 19-18, at the end of the first, the Lady Magicians trailed Spring Hill by halftime with a score of 40-36. However, LOC would rally in the third opening the quarter with a three point basket by guard Shaynn Nance, along with intense defensive pressure that led to 24 Badger turnovers and nine steals for LeMoyne.

Holding a narrow 50-49 edge to enter the final quarter, the Lady Magicians sought to extend their margin, but SHC kept it close eventually tieing the game 62-62, with 3:42 remaining on the clock. Neither team wanting to give in, the Badgers came away with a steal and layup on the other end by Angel Carthen, to go up 68-66, forcing LOC to foul. With seconds left, LOC’s Lamontazia Blair got to the rack for a final layup, but it wouldn’t be enough to take down the Badgers as they hung on for the, 71-68 victory.

The Badgers (11-6, 5-3 SIAC) were led in scoring by senior Jewel Hill with 25 points, and sophomore Tiffany Valentine with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Carthen finished with 10 points.
