Lady Magicians Drop 68-54 Contest to Tuskegee

Tuskegee, Ala., — Visiting the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University, LeMoyne-Owen College womens basketball got off to a slow start in Chappie James Arena.

Plagued by early turnovers, the Lady Magicians trailed 20-10 at the end of the first quarter. Indianapolis native, DonShelle Daniels was the aggressor for the Lady Tigers knocking down shots to give TU a 35-19 advantage at the half. SIAC Newcomer of the Week (Jan.15) honoree, Dana Gettis paced LeMoyne with 11 points at the break, after teammate and fellow SIAC Player of the Week (Jan. 15), Tenesha Wright picked up two early fouls.

Turning up the defensive pressure in the second half, LeMoyne-Owen found themselves getting to the rack and the free-throw line for a late push, in the third, after guard Corlisha Howard attacked the paint for a bucket. However, the Lady Magicians struggled at the line shooting just 50.0% (18-36) at the charity stripe. NaKeeta Franklin gave LOC a spark sinking a triple with 6:22 remaining to make it, 58-41, but Tuskegee would close out the game for the 68-54 victory.
Daniels led the Lady Tigers with her first double-double scoring 18 points along with 10 rebounds. Gettis would finish with a game-high 25 points, followed by Howard with a 10-point performance. Courtney Banks led the rebounding effort with nine boards for LOC, and Wright picked up a game-high of four steals.

LeMoyne-Owen moves to 8-8 overall and 5-5 in conference play. The Lady Magicians visit Miles College (5-10, 3-5 SIAC) in Fairfield, AL, on Monday, Jan. 22 in another SIAC doubleheader. Tip-off is at 5:30pm, with the men following at 7:30pm.
