Lady Magicians Rally Past KSU Thorobrettes, 71-55

Memphis, Tenn., — LeMoyne-Owen College women’s basketball team improved to 10-9 overall, and 7-6 in conference play as LOC picked up their second win in the last three games by defeating Kentucky State University (KSU), 71-55.

Monday night’s win moved LeMoyne-Owen to the No. 3 spot in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference west division standings, with KSU (7-14, 6-7 SIAC) right behind them.

The Lady Magicians were active on both ends of the floor as LOC’s pressure defense led to good offense on the opposite end. LeMoyne-Owen scored 19 points off of KSU’s mistakes and won the rebounding battle 43-37. After the Thorobrettes hit a go ahead jumper to lead, 33-32 at halftime, the momentum didn’t last long as LOC kept there foot on the gas winning the third period 20-12. LOC’s Corlisha Howard was lights out for the Lady Magicians shooting 80% (4-for-5) from behind the arc. Fellow guard and Huntsville, Ala., native Shaynn Nance hit two triples of her own tallying seven points, six rebounds, and four assists. Howard would finish with 12 points joining Tenesha Wright, and Dana Gettis in double-digits with 13 and 21 points, respectively.

Senior forward Taylor Johnson-Prackett and sophomore center Courtney Banks cleaned up the glass alongside Wright, with seven rebounds each. Johnson-Prackett also swatted a game-high four blocks to go with nine points.

Erica Jones, Jordan Campbell, and Brittani Rizzi all tallied nine points for KSU.

LeMoyne-Owen will see Miles College next on Saturday, Feb. 3 as the Lady Magicians look to sweep the Golden Bears in this seasons series. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM CST in Bruce/Johnson Hall.
